Hotter Water, Lower Flows: Why Salmon Rivers Are Under Increasing Stress

October 11, 2025

Compound hydrological and thermal extremes: A nonstationary risk modeling approach for riverine ecosystems

This study shows that rivers are increasingly facing very warm water and low water levels at the same time , especially during summer.

These combined conditions are particularly harmful for Atlantic salmon and other cold-water species.

The research highlights how climate change and large-scale climate patterns are making these events more frequent, and why better tools are needed to understand risks and protect river ecosystems in the future.
